The Power To Act

This is my last post of 2014 and I wanted to give everyone something powerful to think about. Many amongst us may feel that the power to take action resides in others: superiors, big bosses, colleagues, politicians, our significant other, etc., when in fact, we all have that power. The sign that I have attached with this post reads, “If You’re Waiting for a Sign, This Is It.” It is a simple, yet powerful message. Print it, cut it out, and place near you.

Too many of people wait for something before they are willing to take action. They choose to delay the tough decisions or difficult conversations and live with more misery or discontent, rather than deciding to act. We use what I call waiting crutches to delay the inevitable. Excuses like “waiting for the perfect moment,” “waiting for when the person will be feeling better,” “waiting for the momentum to shift,” “waiting until after Christmas,” “waiting until he leaves,” “waiting until she quits,” “waiting until he gets promoted,” “waiting until the boss gets fired,” or “waiting until I’m retired.” The list is endless and the crutches we use to continue with an undesired situation carry us a little bit further every time we choose to wait. But these crutches also take a little bit away from us every time they are used.

If you have been delaying taking action for the better, my hope is that you will look at the sign attached to this post and take it for exactly what you have been waiting for - “The Sign” – and act. Do not allow a bad situation to continue at work, do not stand for mediocrity in your environment, refuse to be mistreated, misrepresented, or misguided at work, in your community, or in life. The status quo can be so comfortable to so many people who would rather choose the mediocre known of today over a powerful new future of new (yet unknown) possibilities.

Thank you to all who have encouraged me to continue to post these articles and to the many who have commented and liked them. See you in 2015.
